Training contracts

Smart thinking

Our trainees, like our lawyers, are united by their focus, their commitment, and their spark. So, with a small intake of around 24 trainees per year, we’re looking for graduates with specific potential. We’re looking for the brightest minds of tomorrow, with the determination to help our clients lead the way in extraordinary fields. Whether you’re a Law or a non-Law student, if you have what we’re looking for, we’ll support you to reach your potential as a brilliant future lawyer.

Great training

Our training contracts are structured to give you the experience you need to blaze a new trail in your career. Over the course of the two-year contract, you’ll move through four six-month seats in different practice groups, including:

  • Construction and Engineering
  • Corporate, Commercial and Projects
  • Corporate Technology
  • Disputes and Investigations
  • Employment, Pensions and Mobility
  • Corporate Finance
  • Finance
  • Information Technology, Telecoms and Competition
  • Patents
  • Private Client, Tax and Incentives
  • Private Equity
  • Real Estate, Environment and Planning
  • Restructuring and Corporate Recovery
  • IP and Media

All trainees take on a seat in either Corporate or Finance, and at least one seat must involve contentious experience. On the remaining two seats, you’ll be able to express your own preferences, so that over the course of the two years, you’ll find the areas that suit your growing expertise. We can also offer opportunities across our network of international offices, as well as client secondments that provide a keen insight into the industries of tomorrow.

Just as we partner start-ups to become the next leaders of industry, we support our trainees to become the next ground-breaking legal minds. So, your training doesn’t end with your training contract. We’ll keep helping you develop your career, with programmes like our Path to Partnership. Setting clear goals and advice on how to progress, we’ll help you move from Associate to Senior Associate; from Senior Counsel to Partner. Your future with us is as unlimited as your talent and determination, and we’ll support you to succeed.

What’s more, you’ll benefit from tailored coaching and personal development advice, as well as engaging in our Skills Training Programme. The programme offers more than 40 courses – on everything from client relationships to business development – and is designed to help you become a game-changing commercial lawyer.

Hear from current trainees

I’ve found that the working environment is as collaborative and collegiate as I’d hoped. Senior partners will greet you in the lift and ask you how it’s going, and the firm goes to great lengths to develop you as a person and give you the training you need to become an expert. That includes being given a great deal of responsibility early on. When I’d only been here for seven months I travelled alone to the offices of a tech start-up in Cambridge to run the company’s board meeting and take them through the loan documents they needed to sign. Although I went on my own, I’d talked through everything with the senior associate beforehand, and he was on the end of the phone if I needed him. This approach is what sets Taylor Wessing apart: as a trainee I’m trusted with work that’s meaningful, but I’m given a level of support that means I never feel out of my depth. The firm’s vibrant social culture also sets it apart. I recently competed in the Prague Marathon as part of a team of Taylor Wessing trainees. I think our clients see us as commercially-minded and pragmatic, but also innovative and willing to try new things. We enjoy working here, and I think that makes us enjoyable to work with.

I love the variety of my work here. My first seat was construction, and clients could range from someone with a residential property to the owners of a huge hotel in Scotland. My highlight has been working as the only trainee on a massive transaction for Brentford Football Club’s new stadium. It was fantastic to work with people who had been living and breathing this for 13 years, and to play a part in making their dream a reality. The deal was signed a couple of days before Christmas and as we celebrated I saw how happy the clients were and how much it meant to them. I was drawn to Taylor Wessing because they seemed to be clear about where they’re going. The firm knows what it wants to achieve and has a clear vision for the future. I was also impressed by the international reach. Although we’re based in London, we get the opportunity to work with lawyers and clients in jurisdictions across the world. I’m about to go on secondment to Singapore for two months for my next seat, which I’m really looking forward to. Lots of workplaces tell you they’re friendly and caring, but it’s 100% true here. I’m part of the popular touch rugby team, which is a mixed team of men and women. Some of the sports teams take part in tournaments with other Taylor Wessing offices around the world, which is a great opportunity to meet colleagues from international offices.

If you’re looking for a career at the forefront of the industries of tomorrow, with clients spanning from the energy sector to the music industry, then it’s time to consider a training contract at Taylor Wessing.
