Join the lawyers ahead of the curve!

I studied Psychology and Cognitive Neuroscience at university so Taylor Wessing’s focus on the science and technology sectors was part of the reason I applied. I recently qualified into the Patents department. One of my most exciting projects so far has been running a legal advice clinic for a start-up accelerator. I worked closely with the team and liaised with experts across the firm to provide legal advice to a range of early-stage technology companies. At the end of the process I was invited to the start-up showcase in a huge cinema in Mile End. It was incredible to see companies that I’d worked with right at the beginning of their journey now attracting enormous interest from important investors. Seeing my name up in lights as a legal mentor was a brilliant feeling. Our cohort of trainees is really close, and there are plenty of social, sporting and volunteering opportunities. I’m on the committee for the Blackfriars Legal Advice Clinic, working with colleagues to give pro bono legal advice. We provide help to members of the community in areas like employment and housing law.

Before I even started at the firm, I was made to feel like a Taylor Wessing trainee. We were invited to social events while we were still studying, and the firm put real emphasis on us forming bonds with our fellow trainees. The relatively small trainee intake means that we quickly gain a lot of hands-on experience of high-calibre work with high-profile clients. In my first seat I was given a lot of responsibility on several matters. I also assisted on some international advisory work during my seat in Private Client, as well as. It was amazing seeing them appear in the legal and national press. One of my highlights so far has been leading an £11 million completion. I was obviously anxious to make sure it ran smoothly, but my supervisor was always on hand to help and always gave me brilliant support when I needed it. I remember feeling quite nervous, but now I look back on it as the best experience I’ve had here. It’s great knowing that I’ve really developed my skills and there’s a real sense of accomplishment when you’ve helped a client through a transaction or a court case.

I can honestly say that I enjoy coming into work and I’m proud to be part of Taylor Wessing. When I started I was less familiar with the firm than some of the other trainees because I hadn’t done a vacation scheme here, but I was made to feel welcome immediately. The Finance team was friendly and open, and the partner who was my supervisor was extremely helpful and supportive. I have been given a high level of responsibility from the outset of my training contract. I’m given the freedom to manage my own workload and I have plenty of direct contact with clients. I’m trusted to propose my own solutions, draft documents and push matters forward. In my second seat, as part of the Real Estate Finance team, I was given the opportunity to manage the lease assignment of a large office building to an American multi-national. I was given responsibility for dealing with the matter day to day, including drafting the documents, liaising with the agent and the client and negotiating the terms with solicitors on the other side. While I was supervised at all times, this provided me with a good insight into the type of work I would encounter post-qualification. There’s a very strong social culture in the firm too. I like to play sport and keep active, and there have been plenty of opportunities to do that while working here. Along with other members of the firm, I’ve taken part in marathons and triathlons, attended a Taylor Wessing golf day, and I play rugby with the firm’s rugby sevens team.
